Winners of the “Wales Volunteer of the Year 2008” from Gwynedd.

volunteer bureau Through this award, an opportunity is provided annually to acknowledge and appreciate committed volunteers who have made a difference in their communities. The Award is administered by the Wales Council of Voluntary Associations, and in December, each year, a challenge is set to people across Wales to nominate someone special who has inspired them by what they do as a volunteer. There are five different categories:- •young person under 25, •adult, •green volunteer, •trustee, •groups (consisting of two or more). Throughout Wales, 198 nominations were received, nine of them from Gwynedd. The judging panel has selected Mr James Hewett, who volunteers as a trustee with the Welsh Highland Railway, to be among the national winners.

Designed to Add Value - a third dimension: A Strategic Direction for the Voluntary and Community Sector in supporting Health and Social Care

health Designed to Add Value - a third dimension has been produced by the Welsh Assembly Government to inform future directions and support the evidence base of the voluntary sector's contribution to health and social care. It will serve to inform planners and commissioners in the development of the Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Strategies and the commissioning process across Wales. Ensuring that the right services are provided 'in the right place, to the right person, at the right time' will require a more innovative and flexible approach to local service provision supporting health and social care in the community. Delivering health and social care services is no longer the preserve of statutory services but will require stronger and co-ordinated partnerships across the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors as well as with local people, carers and patients. The voluntary sector has a key role to play in supporting health, social care and well being, particularly in preventing ill health; shifting the balance of provision closer to where people live; involving local people and delivering the type of responsive services and support people want. It also has a role in empowering the citizens of Wales to live more vibrant and fulfilled lives, through community development, using volunteering as a vehicle for capacity and skill building, engagement with vulnerable groups and supporting people to reach their full potential through advocacy, advice and self care. Designed to Add Value - a third dimension sets out where we are now, where we want to be and how we will get there and identifies strategic guidance for the voluntary sector in supporting health and social care in the future. It recognises the added value the sector brings as well as the synergy it realises when working effectively with all partners through nine key strategic themes.

City of Bangor Good Neighbours Project

volunteer bureau The Women’s Royal Voluntary Service has been managing a legacy left by Iris Parry, a former Mayor of Bangor City, for the recipients of Meals on Wheels in Bangor. The legacy was left to provide for additional comforts for housebound elderly people in the City of Bangor. Since the WRVS no longer provides a Meals on Wheels service for the area of Bangor, it was decided that the money should be made available for a new project which would be open to all elderly people in the city over the age of 60. To this end, the remainder of the legacy has been used to fund a Good Neighbours Project for Bangor which is aimed at helping to keep clients independent and living at home for longer, reducing the needs to access health and social care services, whilst giving the support and interaction needed.

NIACE Dysgu Cymru - Learning in Later Life

health When the new community education classes start in September a quick glance around any of the centres will probably convince you that many older people are actively engaged in learning. Research recently published tells us that they do so because they enjoy it and have an interest in their subject. Also, that as a result of learning they make new friends and feel that they have increased confidence and improved communication skills. The Centre for Research on the Wider Benefits of Learning tells us that adults involved in learning are likely to lead healthier lives and there is evidence that learning delays some effects of Alzheimer’s. For older workers the opportunity to learn prolongs and enriches working life and keeps valuable experience within the workforce.
